  A Dedication to Open-Air Atmos

TYM Homes, the Utah-based custom residential and commercial A/V, automation, and security installation company, was brought into the renovation process for an Idaho home built in the late ’80s. The owner, who had retired from medical practice and had gone into the commercial property development field, was both comfortable with and interested in new connected-home technologies.

They were also a quick study – receptive to TYM’s ideas about how to outfit the home with both a fresh, modern aesthetic, but also add state-of-the-art smart home and home entertainment systems.

Since the home was stripped down to the studs, TYM could run new wiring for 4K video distribution, TVs, distributed home audio, touch screens, surround sound and security. The homeowner and the family are music-lovers, so bringing audio into each area of the home with out-of-the-way architectural speakers was a welcomed feature.

“We chose Savant to bring all the systems together into one easy-to-use interface," said Matt Montgomery, president of TYM and a lead designer with Greg Montgomery on the project. "From the Savant App, all of the home’s systems, including climate control, lighting, TVs, video sources, home audio, surround sound and security were controllable. Having everything in one app makes things easier for the homeowner and their family."

TYM had just finished pre-wiring, and Sheetrock was literally being hung, and at the last minute, the client asked for something he thought was an impossible “get,” said Montgomery.

An iPad LaunchPort system was deployed for control of the home's systems via the Savant Pro app.

He told Montgomery how much time would be spent on the back patio during the warmer months, while their children played in the expansive backyard.

“It’s too bad we can’t put surround sound out here,” he said – to which Montgomery responded, “Actually, you can … and it can be amazing.” Montgomery said the client “was beside himself – excited for us to try and push the envelope.”

So the team went to work creating an outdoor TV area with in-ceiling Paradigm speakers, including an in-ceiling subwoofer, for a 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos audio system. The Atmos system turned an already nice outdoor space into a “wow” outdoor space.

“You can certainly tell when you’re sitting there that it’s Atmos. Things are flying overhead. It’s effective, and the client loves it,” Montgomery said. “He told us shortly after the install that he spends more time watching movies out on his deck than he does inside.”

In fact, the client has three surround systems in the home from which to choose. Besides the outdoor system, there is a dedicated media room in the basement for the children and a great room that is just inside of the deck, also equipped with a Dolby Atmos system.

The remodel was smooth sailing all the way. “What was unusual was that the owner was the general contractor on his own home, and was the go-between with others. Usually, it was him relaying us the information we needed to know, about design elements,” explained Montgomery.

With the remodel complete, the home now looks — and sounds — amazing, Montgomery said. Welcoming, modern, yet warm interiors beckon the family and their guests into a newly refreshed home filled with music, love, and the best in home technology.
