  Rustic Luxury

When Joe Valcik started to think about how to outfit his newest project a lot of ideas came to mine. The new home in Flagstaff, Arizona called for a design that combines both rustic and contemporary elements. Consulting with his team, Innovation Integrations, the project took place over a two-year span, coming to life after 50 hours of preliminary meetings, 43 hours of wiring, and 96 hours spent in trimming and programming the system.

The homeowners, a young couple with two tech-savvy daughters aged 14 and nine, had definite requests in mind: they wanted a hidden system that afforded them control over every device in the home, from everywhere - including audio, video, security, climate and shading, along with advanced control functionality, including garage doors and even the steam shower.

To make family and friends who visited from India feel totally at home as guests, the clients also wanted every type of Indian programming available that was offered, and all the media streaming options accessible throughout the house. To accommodate this desire, said Valcik, “I designed the system with a video matrix switch, and they can pull up Amazon Fire and Roku; there are a dozen streaming devices they can access from anywhere.”

The crowning tech achievement, though, is the home’s dedicated theater. Valcik at first presented a sampling of the type of theater that could be done by showing the family the one installed in his own home, which is set up as a showroom. Then, he continued, “I gave the clients a preview at another house in the same community I had done a similar system at, with an incredible Dolby Atmos 11.2 theater – and they fell in love.”

The challenge – overcome with the help of the other disciplines involved in the project, particularly the interior designer, Julie White – was squeezing a 140-inch Screen Innovations Fixed Slate film screen and the sound system, along with an equipment closet for the entire home, into a second-floor room above the garage that was both narrow and did not have high ceilings. The collaboration was extremely successful, said Valcik. “The theater sounds incredible. It’s one of the better-sounding theaters we’ve done.”

With the close cooperation of the architect, interior designer, and the builder – the latter, aptly named Harmony – all working in sync, “everything came together so well,” said Valcik.
