Well Being and Home Air Quality

Throughout the world, people are doing everything within their power and reach to help protect themselves and family members from COVID-19. With families spending so much time at home, it’s more than just COVID-19 that should be taken into consideration when trying to stay healthy.

Most people have exposure to the fresh air outside a couple of times every day, whether en route to and from work or school, sports activities, or running errands. During this unprecedented period, families are encouraged to stay home and only venture outside for a walk, to go to the grocery store or pharmacy and keep social distancing in mind.

According to a report from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the air within homes and other buildings can be up to five times more polluted than outdoor air. The EPA also estimated that people spend approximately 90 percent of their time indoors. Fortunately, the air quality can be improved in our homes today.

For homeowners seeking a simple, effective solution to maintaining pristine air quality during these days of extended stay-at-home stretches of time, there is an answer: Sharp’s patented Plasmacluster (PCI) Ion Air Purifiers.

Peter Weedfald, senior vice president of sales and marketing for Sharp Home Appliances, notes that “Unlike most home air purifiers with HEPA filters needing to be changed every few months, the HEPA filters in Sharp’s air purification units only need to be changed every two to five years, depending on the model. The benefits of True HEPA are there, plus the benefits of PCI,” he says.

Ion Technology

Diving more deeply into Sharp’s technology, Weedfald explains that the units create positive and negative ions. “They fly through the air, connecting to viruses, bacteria, pet dander, mold, mildew, and odors – anything they can attach themselves to. Then the Plasmacluster ion takes hold of hydrogen and floats away as water vapor, while the remains of the now inactive pollutant simply fall apart,” says Weedfald. “Once the Plasmacluster Ions break apart a pollutant, leftover bits normally get stuck to and whisked away by the newly created water molecule.”

When tested in a closed laboratory setting, he says, Sharp Plasmacluster Ion technology has been proven effective in reducing the following:

• Certain viruses, including MS2 (90.3% reduction). MS2 is a viral stimulant and surrogate in laboratory testing for many common infectious microorganisms such as influenza and smallpox.
• Certain bacteria including: E. Coli (94.0% reduction), Staphylococcus Epidermidis (84.3% reduction), Serratia marcescens (89.7% reduction)
• Certain common molds and fungus, including Penicillium Citrinum (87.7% reduction),
• Aspergillus Niger (85.8% reduction)

Sharp Plasmacluster Ion technology has been proven effective in reducing some odors such as cigarette smoke, and odors from cooking, pets, and perspiration that conventional filters don’t reach that are embedded in carpets, drapery, and furniture.

An interesting point also worth noting, says Weedfald, is that an air purification system can produce ozone. However, Sharp’s Plasmacluster Ion air purifiers are CARB Certified (California Air Resources Board), because they produce an insignificant amount of ozone.

 Simply Better Living

With a focus on Simply Better Living, Sharp has developed multiple air purifier models that combine the three critical elements of humidification, True HEPA filtration and Sharp Plasmacluster Ion technology to help ensure that indoor air quality is cleaner and safer. “For me, more than anything, the only thing I would want to do is to get people in America to understand air purification, to take notice, and then take action,” says Weedfald. “If you care about people, whether they’re working at a store, or they’re at home, wherever, then ‘simply better living’ – Sharp’s mantra – means you should have a simple solution better than what’s out there now.

“Sure, we have True HEPA, and Sharp HEPA filters may last longer than most. True HEPA is great. Many products have it. But only Sharp has PCI technology that nobody can duplicate. And that means you’ll have a better, happier lifestyle.”
